wife under the condition that she remarry:

1885 -- Emmy Hennings lives, Germany. Met Hugo Ball in 1913,
married him & went to Zurich with him in 1915, where she helped
found the "Cabaret Voltaire" & took part in its performances.

1940 -- Canada: Emma Goldman suffers a severe stroke
which leaves her paralyzed on the right side & unable to
speak; she is rushed to the hospital where she remains
for six weeks.

scientists evacuate the V-2 rocket site at Peenemünde before

These Nazis & Nazi-collaborators figure they are better off
bartering with the US. They readily embraced the goal of
creating weapons during the years of the Third Reich.
After the war they encouraged the myth that described them
as brilliant visionaries whose genius had been exploited by
the Nazi regime.

1970 -- US: 76 are arrested & 20 injured in a downtown confrontation
between police & an anti-war demonstration organized by the Seattle

Dubbed "The Day After" (TDA), SLF leaders soon
lost control of some 2,000 protesters, including many
teenagers, who began pelting the Courthouse & police with

1919 -- US: Seattle General Strike begins, 10am. Shipyard strike
of 32,000 workers sparks General Strike as workers take control
of the city for a week. Crime drops dramatically.

It is this sort of 'wildcat' activism which leads the
Postmaster General, in the 30s, to refer to the US
as being comprised of these

"47 states & the Soviet of Washington".

Harvey O'Connor's sympathetic Revolution in Seattle
remains the best book on this event. Originally published

1935 -- Who Owns You?: The game of "Monopoly" invented (more or less).

The game of monopoly is one of accumulation, making it perfect
for our times. The aim is for each player to make profits through
the sale of a single commodity — land — & to expand their empire.
In real life one single commodity generates all profits — our labor
power. Since labor power cannot be separated from people, we
are literally bought & sold in the market place. To prevent
stagnation, capitalism must constantly expand. Thus we must also
consume as well as produce.

1941 -- France: Maximilien Luce, 82, dies. French painter &
engraver. A reader of Jean Grave's "La révolte", & eventually
his friend. In 1887, Pissaro, Seurat & Signac inducted him into
their group of neo-impressionists.

During the repression of 1894 Luce was imprisoned as a
"dangerous anarchist" whose drawings were judged
"inciting people to revolt".

out on the street in the midst of a tank car spill of corn syrup.

1951 -- France: Marcelino Massana arrested in Toulouse.
Massana's arrest was a typical example of the willingness of the
French carabineros to work with their fascist counterparts in
Interpol. Spain demanded his extradition for "crimes" in Spain,
but a court refused.

Massana is one of the great anti-Franco guerrillas, on a par
with Francisco Sabaté, Vila Capdevila & Facerías.

1960 -- ¶ Poet John Ciardi in the Saturday Review publishes
the critical "Epitaph for the Dead Beats" which accuses the Beats
of being anti-intellectual.

1973 -- US: 200 American Indian Movement protesters clash
with police for three days in Custer (!), South Dakota, over the
murder of Wesley Bad Heart; 37 arrested.

1976 -- Canada: Native American activist Leonard Peltier
is captured &, on the basis of fictitious affidavits generated
by the FBI, is later extradited to the US. Federal prosecutors
later admit they don't have a clue who committed the crime
they convicted Peltier for. He remains in prison to this day.

1996 --

US: Government says it shipped
plutonium to 39 countries over the last
59 years (including Israel, South
Africa, Iran & Iraq).

2002 -- US: Secretary of State Powell tells Congress there must
be a "regime change in Iraq, & the US may have to do it alone".
Congress laps it up.

2003 -- North Korea: Government says it is entitled to make a
preemptive attack on the US (this follows the rightwing Bush
administration's declaration it will attack any country it
deems fit for destruction).

2004 -- Walter Morrison MBE, Scottish community activist in Glasgow,
dies. Miltant, active in the anti-nuclear Scottish Committee of 100.

A week after the scot Stuart Christie was arrested in
Spain in 1964, having been caught playing a part in a plot to
assassinate the country's dictator, General Franco, Morrison
hitched-hiked from Glasgow to London to hold a fast & a
picket the Spanish embassy (having first telephoned
Scotland Yard to ask permission). No sooner had he settled
down on the pavement when a police van drew up & four
policemen jumped out, bundled him into the van & drove to
an unidentified London police station.

Anarchists were among the forerunners of the Esperantist workingmen movement. In Stockholm, in 1905, and Paris in 1906, the first Esperantist groupes were formed. The Paco-Libereco Group (Peace and Liberty Group) realized a great work of publishing. In Shanghai, Pa Chin (Ba jin)studied Esperanto. In a dictionary of Chinese and foreign writers, published in 1934, he was classified as an Esperantist intellectual.

Slowly but surely, Esperanto was introduced in revolutionary and workingmen circles. Anarchists and Anarcho-Syndicalists (who were the most numerous members of the Esperantist proletarian movement before World War I) gathered in the international association "Paco Libereco" which edited the parper Internacia Socio Revuo (Social and International Review - 1906). In 1914, in Paris, the Tenth Universal Congress appeared as an opportunity for revolutionary Esperantists who wished to create an organization in the fringe of the peace movement. But as war broke out, the Congress was cancelled.

It was only in 1921 in Prague that the first Congress of Esperantist Workingmen took place and witnessed the creation of SAT (Sennacieca Asocio Tutmonda - Anational and Worldwide Association). SAT was not a political party but a cultural and educational organization. Its gaol was to facilitate the creation of rational minds able to compare, understand and judge different ideas, themes and tendencies. Members were to obtain the most information possible in order to choose the most honest and realiable ways of emancipating their own class.

The principle of blind neutrality was given up and the idea of Esperanto as an aid in fighting for the emancipation of the working class emerged. Three objectives were mentioned :

The practice of Esperanto to help the international world working-class ;

The facilitation of relations between SAT members and the development of human solidarity ;

Information and education of the members with the aim of transforming them into the most able and accomplished fellows among the Anationalists.

SAT was created at a time when many workingmen from all tendencies were still looking towards the Russian revolution as a first step in the triumph of the socialist idea. But as the myth of Revolution was vanishing, the revolutionary Esperantists that had been influenced by the Russian events began to feel disappointed. Moreover, Communists were more and more demanding and tried to convert SAT in an organization dedicated exclusively to Moscow. For ten years, there was a fight between communists and their opponents, who wanted SAT to remain a cultural and educational organization, in favour of the working-class, politically independent, as had been decided in Prague. Finally, at the 11th Congress, held in Amsterdam in 1931, the majority refused the communist domination, and the followers of Moscow left the association to create a separate, communist organization.

Two Russians and a Frenchman created the nucleus of TLES (Tutmonda Ligo de Esperantisja Seustatano - Worldwide League of Esperantist Anarchists) which in a few months had members from fifteen different countries. But the context in Russia was one of Bolshevik repression of anarchist voices. After the disappearance of his two Russian friends, the Frenchman, Julien Migny, with the help of his friend Juliette, took the responsibility of the TLES administration. Belgium, China and Japan also joined this new esperantist organization.

In 1923, the Russian anarchists A. Levandowsky and J. Zilberfarb founded ISAB (Internacilingua Scienca Anarkiusm Biblioteka - The Anarchist Scientific Libraryin International Language). They called the other anarchist Esperantists all around the world, hoping to create a worldwide organisation.

In August 1925, TLES began to publish in Berlin its monthly review Libero Laboristo (The Free Workingman) and in 1933 edited a newsletter for use by IWA, the anarcho-syndicalist international movement in collaboration with the U.S.A. But they would soon face repression, both in Germany and the United States.

During the war years in Spain, there was a systematic persecution of Esperantist activities in the zone occupied by General Franco. In Malaga, on February 1937, the Esperantist group was shot "for the unique reason they were Esperantists". Ironically, the man responsible for such a crime became honorary president of an Esperantist Congresss 31 years later.

Germany, the Soviet Union and Spain thus repressed the libertarian Esperantist movement and, finally, the TLES ceased to exist.

After World War II, the Esperantist Anarchists came into contact again with the TLES. In 1946, in Paris, "Senstatano" appeared first as a section from the Committee of the International Young Anarchists. They also spoke in the name of the Anarchist Esperantist Movement, continuing the work begun by the TLES. in the meantime, the libertarian Esperantist Esperantist group in Paris workind in close collaboration with the Commission of International Anarchist Relations, translating newsletters. They also delt with relations in Esperanto with comrades of other countries.

Finally, in 1969, the Anarchist section of SAT took a new start in publishing the monthly paper "Libericana ligilo" with the gaol of spreading the anarchist ideal in the Esperantist circles as well as spreading Esperanto in anarchist sections, one of the best places for Esperanto to develop.

The veterans testify that the My Lai massacre was not an
isolated incident & that American troops have committed

US acts. The proceedings capture little attention.

1980 -- Guatemala: Elias Barahona, official spokesman for
the Ministry of the Interior, reveals the President, General
Romeo Lucas García, ordered police to set fire to the
Spanish embassy with its occupants inside.

39 people are roasted alive, including 27 Indians
peacefully occupying the embassy to denounce
massacres in the Quiche region.

Barahona also claims a "Program of pacification"

Clinton failed to act, "the safety of American
troops in the region, of our friends & allies
like Israel & the moderate Arab states, & a
significant portion of the world's supply of oil
will all be put at hazard".

They acknowledged that this doctrine would
be opposed, but "American policy cannot
continue to be crippled by a misguided
insistence on unanimity in the UN Security
Council".

Project for the New American Century,
is the pressure group established by,
among others, Dick Cheney, Donald
Rumsfeld, Jeb Bush, Paul Wolfowitz,
Lewis Libby, Elliott Abrams & Zalmay
Khalilzad, all of whom (except the
president's brother) are now senior

liberation from from colonial rule. But a major impetus
for adopting the US Constitution, a compromise
